Casa Upper Elementary Summer Reading Books

  1. Students who are new to the class should read at least 6 books this summer. Returning children should read at least 9. Please consider these numbers to be your minimum goals and challenge yourself to read more. Read nonfiction books as well as fiction. Specifically read at least one nonfiction history or science book and one biography. The library is a great place to find this kind of book, as well as quality fiction. You may include three books on tape if you wish. Book tapes are a wonderful way to share quality time in the car. The library has a selection of tapes also.

  2. When you finish a book, record the author and the title. Then record your opinion of the book. Use the following three categories: highly recommended (HR), recommended (R), or not recommended (NR). You may include a reason for your recommendation if you like. Bring this list to school on the first day.

  3. I have left some book lists in the box by the front door outside of school if you want one; however, you do not really need one. Go to the library and spend some time browsing. Ask your parents and older friends what their favorite books were when they were your age. If you have read a book that you liked, look for other books by the same author. Put no more than two books by the same author on your list so that you read books by a number of different authors. Remember that reading is like a journey; some of your most exciting adventures will come when you are willing to explore.

  4. Do not worry too much about the grade or age level of the book. If a book looks interesting to you, you can always look up a few words in the dictionary or ask your parents what something means. However, if a book has many words on each page that you do not know, it would be better to wait until you are older to read it. The idea is to read what would be considered ability appropriate books for you. That means books that are not too easy or too hard.

Happy Reading! Have a Great summer!
