Sope Creek Project
hadley.jpg (152120 bytes)We have just received funding from the Captain Planet Foundation to purchase lab equipment to enhance our field and classroom studies related to our project to monitor the water quality of Sope Creek. Here is a description of activities and a revised schedule of visits to Sope Creek for the remainder of this year:
  1. Observe and record weather conditions, land and water conditions for erosion and pollution, and presence of indigenous flora and fauna, as well as migratory birds and insects. Children will not be in the water.
  2. Test for water temperature and ph.
  3. Test for rate of flow of water and possibly estimate the flow volume.
  4. Document activities with photographs.

On Site Equipment:
Observation sheets, sketch pad, pencils, and mat boards, camera, compass, anemometer, ph kit, thermometer, depth measuring stick, dip net, small bucket, water quality indicator's guide, location map, Chattahoochee River parking pass funds, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, first aid kit. Children should wear long pants and walking shoes.

Participants for each visit:

  1. Casa Parent Driver, Mr. Hadley Wellborn, upper elementary science assistant, 1 lower elementary staff, and 3 lower elementary students.

  2. S.O.S. drivers, thank you for offering your time to help in this project! Drivers need to transport group to creek observation site across the bridge, then take the vehicle to parking lot, deposit parking fee and walk back to group. This is a 10 minute walk along side of road. The driver will assist in the test for the rate of the water flow and help the children with observations. Twenty minutes before departure the driver needs to return to parking lot and bring vehicle to pick up the group to return to Casa.

Stewards of Sope Creek Journal
by the elementary students at Casa Montessori

At Sope Creek there was a lot of plant material on the ground, such as branches, and clumps of leaves. There was a little bit of plant material in the creek. The plants material in the creek was lettuce and logs.

The plants near the creek were moss, tiles of grass, trees, wild Rose river cane and live Oak. The plants in the creek was only a tree.

The evidence of erosion was large. The evidence was banks of sand, water on high banks and exposed roots. The color of the water was brown and green.

The rate of flow in the water was fast. The rate was 6 feet/second.
